Ask The Readers: How Do You Boost Your Child's Immune System? | Growing Up Herbal | I'm spilling the beans on how I boost my kid's immune system before and during cold and flu season. Psst... you can do it too!

It always seems that as soon as school is back in session, I start thinking of all things fall.

You know, cool weather, leaves changing, fall baking recipes, and cold and flu season.

With thoughts of cold and flu season on my mind, I immediately start thinking of the things I need to have on hand to keep my kids healthy during this time of the year and things to have pre-made if we do come down with something.

Today I wanna talk about prevention and keeping kids healthy.

You know, boosting immune systems and such.

I get emails from many mamas wanting to know what they can do to boost their kid’s immune system so they can prevent their kids from getting sick… or at least do their best to prevent it.

So how do we as parents boost our kids’ immune systems?

Well, I think it’s important to understand that our kids will get sick, and when that happens, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re doing a bad job at keeping our kids healthy. Kids naturally have weaker immune systems than adults because adults have had longer to build theirs up.

Now I’m not making excuses or saying not to worry about your kid’s immune system because they will get sick no matter what you do. I’m not saying anything of the sort. Keeping our kids healthy and working to give them strong immune systems is one of the best things we can do for them. The stronger their immune system is, the quicker it identifies pathogens and works to remedy the situation. Having a strong immune system also leads to an increase in antibody production which allows the body to remember particular pathogens more quickly. Hence, it acts quicker the next time you’re exposed to the same thing.

So when it comes to boosting my kid’s immune systems, I start before they ever get sick by feeding them healthy, real food meals, teaching them how to wash their hands, so they don’t pick up unwanted germs, keeping my house clean using homemade cleaners to discourage germs from being brought in and spread, and by using herbs and essential oils for prevention as well. I talk more specifically about each of these things in my post – 5 Ways To Naturally Boost Your Child’s Immune System, but enough about me.

Now it’s your turn!

I use homemade vitamin tincture, vitamin chews, silver, grapefruit seed extract, elderberry, vitamin C, echinacea, and fermented foods. This year I’m planning to make my own herbal popsicles and candy for healthier alternatives to all of the sugary treats this time of year! 🙂
