February Book Club Selection: Aromatherapy For The Healthy Child

February Book Club Selection: Aromatherapy For The Healthy Child | Growing Up Herbal | Learn more on using essential oils for children in this book club book!

It’s time for another book club read this month, and I think you natural mamas are gonna love this one! Not only is it a great read now, but it’s a great resource to use again and again with your family.

When trying to find an e-book for us to read this month, I was a bit at a loss. I wanted to find something that you were struggling with, but also something that was interesting and not redundant.

There are TONS of e-books out there on food and nutrition… lots that I want to dig into, but I thought we’d explore a different area this month.

The area of aromatherapy, and I hope you’ll join me!

Aromatherapy for the Healthy Child by Valerie Ann Worwood

Essential oils are all the rage these days, and for good reason.

First off, they work. Secondly, they’re natural. And third, they’re easy to use.

However, there’s a lot of misinformation that circulates the web on how to use them… especially when it comes to kids. I’m all about using EOs (seeing as how they’re herbal in nature), but I’m a stickler for safety. I like to get my info from unbiased sources and from experienced herbalists and/or aromatherapists.

One of the reasons I chose this book is because, well, there weren’t many options for ebooks on aromatherapy or using essential oils for children, and secondly because I trust the author. I’ve known of Valerie Worwood for as long as I’ve been using essential oils in my home. Check out the except about her below!

Valerie Ann Worwood is considered the world’s foremost authority on aromatherapy and essential oils. Her client list includes well-known actors, models, musicians, royalty, and heads of state. A practicing aromatherapist, reflexologist, and doctor of alternative medicine, Worwood owns and operates her own clinic in Romford, England. She is presently conducting research on aromatherapy and its effects on endometriosis and infertility. Among her many other credentials, Worwood is a former Chairman of Research and a Fellow at the International Federation of Aromatherapists, consultant to several European beauty and health clinics. Her first American publication, The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy (New World Library 1992), has sold over 300,000 copies in North America alone. She is also the author of The Fragrant Mind, Aromatherapy for the Soul, and Essential Aromatherapy. (Source)

Doesn’t she sound great?

In this book, Valerie teaches about the basics of essential oils (about their names and how to store them), how to use them (blending, safety, etc.), and how to create a basic kit for your kids. Next up she goes into specific conditions that EOs can be used for as well as how to use oils for the seriously ill child. Finally she oils effects on the mind, will, and emotions. On top of all the information in this book, Valerie provides over 300 oil uses that you can use in your family. All this from a certified, well-known, trusted aromatherapist… without having to pay the price tag to be her client.

Now just like professionals in any field, aromatherapists will often disagree on oil uses and safety. Some of this depends on where they were taught about oils or on their own experiences using those oils personally and professionally. Although I’ve grown considerably in this are over the years, I’m sure there will be places in this book where I will disagree with her. I’m not saying she’s wrong (she’s the expert here, not me). I’m just assuming that there will be areas where I’ll chose to do things differently with my family than she suggests. Maybe, maybe not. I’ve not read the book yet, but I’m excited too!

About The “Natural Mama’s Book Club”

First off… the monthly books are gonna be easy to access. They will all be an e-book of some sort so that you can get access to it right away, and each book will have to do with some aspect of living healthy, natural lives. Most of the books are broken down fairly well and aren’t too long or complicated. Perfect for us busy moms, right!

Secondly… I’m going to be reading these books along with you so if you struggle to find time to sit down and read a book, join the club because most of us are in the same boat.

Lastly, my friend and book club leader, Shannon, will be here on the last Friday of every month to share her review of the book right here on the blog. She’s gonna talk about how it helped her, big lessons learned, how she’s planning to use the info from the book, and so much more. After that, the conversation surrounding the book will move to the comment section because I wanna share what I got from it as well as hear what your thoughts were too.
