“Mama! Can we play Wildcraft? Will you play with us?”

I can’t tell you how many times I hear this from my kids. Seriously!

Forget Candy Land. Forget Shutes and Ladders. Forget Checkers. My kids prefer this game over other popular kid’s games.

Taking A Chance On The Unknown

When I first heard of the Wildcraft game from Learning Herbs, I just passed over it for something else.

I thought that my kids were too small for it, I wasn’t sure how much I’d learn about herbs from a simple board game, and I wasn’t even sure if the game was all that good. I mean, people have careers as game designers. How on earth could someone without this kind of background actually create and design a game that worked well, kept kids attention, and actually taught them something in a fun way?

I’ll tell you… I simply wasn’t convinced the game was worth the money.

Some time later, Learning Herbs decided to offer the game for 50% off along with some other great freebies. I thought it was a really good deal for all the stuff I’d be getting, my kids were older, I was tired of all the meaningless games out there for kids, and there were some really great testimonials about the game from past customers. So, I decided to go for it… to take a chance on it.

And you know what? I’m SO glad I did!

A Fun Herbal Board Game

The first time I opened the game up, I was seriously impressed! It was an actual board game like the ones you’d buy in a store. It was printed on a sturdy board, the cards were stiff and glossy, the game pieces didn’t feel cheap, and the colors popped out at you. I’m not sure what I was expecting… a homemade game printed on cheap materials? I don’t know, but I can say that this game was the real deal. It looked impressive.

When I sat down to play the game with my kids, we played it with the board only and didn’t include the optional story that goes along with the game. Things went well, we got a feel for the game, and I’m pretty sure we all enjoyed it.

However… I felt that we were missing something. The accompanying story.

You see, the game revolves around a story of kids visiting their grandma during the summer. Grandma has taught the kids about local herbs each summer during their visits, but this time is different. This time, the kids go out on their own, without Grandma, up the mountain, in search of huckleberries for one of Grandma’s famous pies. Along the way, they experience many different struggles and setbacks and they have to learn how to deal with those issues using the lessons learned from Grandma over the years.

The next time we played the game, and every time after that, we used the story throughout the game, and it makes such a huge difference. My kids love it, and they never get tired of hearing it over and over.

There’s More To Wildcraft Than Simply Learning Herbs… You Learn About Teamwork And Helping Others Too

Another thing I really like about this game is that it’s all about helping others and sharing what you know.

In this game, there are opportunities for you to share the herbs you’ve collected with other players in order to help them with their ailments along the way. I mean, isn’t that what herbalism is all about. Herbalism is the people’s medicine. It’s simple enough for everyone to know and use, and it’s meant to be shared, practiced, and taught to others. I just love it!

Oh, and this game isn’t about winning.

I know, I know. How do you play a board game without winning? I originally thought that too. I thought this was one of those “no competition” type things where no one was challenged, but that’s simply not true.

Yes, the game isn’t a competition to see who can beat others. To finish the game, everyone must cross the finish line so there are times during the game when one player can pull another player up to where he is in the game. This not only helps you finish the game quicker, but it also teaches kids to think of others. And yes, there are challenges in the game… all throughout the game!

So Was It Worth It?

Absolutely! This game is totally worth the money. In fact, I’d pay full price for it!

Wildcraft’s creator, Kimberly Gallager, did an excellent job with this game. I mean, she had a vision for this game, and she and the team that worked on it made her vision a reality. She’s a mom, and she too knew what her kids needed in order to make learning herbs fun. She’s also got an educational background so she does an excellent job putting the story together to facilitate learning in a fun way.

I totally didn’t give this game the credit it deserved at first (I’m so sorry Kimberly), but now I’m a huge supporter of it! In fact, after I bought this game and played it with my kids, I started looking for other similar games to get them. Fun, educational games that teach them great life lessons. (Another great one we got last year is the game Camp!)

  2. Tiffany says:

    Hi Meagan,
I love your blogs! They really inspire and encourage me to continue on in the fascination of wild crafting and herbalism- all things good and wholesome and natural. So it is disheartening when I cannot participate in your contests because our family does not ascribe to any online social networking. We don’t fault those who do but feel secluded because we don’t. Perhaps you could allow those who don’t do Facebook or Twitter to send an email as an alternate way to enter?
Thanks again for your blog. I look forward to hearing more of your heart!

    • Meagan says:

Oh no! I’m so sorry Tiffany! I’ve done giveaways on the blog in the past as well as Facebook only giveaways, and the ones on Facebook always get way more attention and entries so that’s why I’ve been sticking with them lately. I will definitely keep this in mind though. I’ll have another giveaway coming up at the end of the month, and I’ll host that one on the blog. Again… I’m so sorry. Is there anyone that could enter it for you? All you have to do is click “like” or leave a comment. I don’t make you like a ton of pages or anything like that.

  3. Jen says:

    Hi Meagan!

I love reading your blog! Your wisdom has been so helpful on many occasions. In fact, when I’m wondering about something that has to do with herbal remedies and my kids I often check your blog to see if you have posted about it. I also am a RN and an aspiring herbalist, though my at home herbal course is creeping slower than a snail these days with a couple littles and a homeschool routine! I just saw this email and would love to enter the contest, however, I decided to delete my facebook account just a few weeks ago to further simplify my life. Is this a facebook only contest? If so thats ok. Keep up the awesome blog!

    • Meagan says:

Yes, Jen. It is a Facebook only contest, and I’m so sorry. They tend to do better than the blog giveaways, but I’ve gotten some other comments about readers preferring them on the blog so I’ll probably move them back over here. I’m so sorry about this one, but stay tuned as I have another one coming up later in the month.
