Homemade Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe for Cold Winter Days

My kids LOVE making cups of hot chocolate on cold winter days. I mean, there’s nothing like coming in from playing in the snow to find a warm, rich cup of something tasty to thaw you out. It’s also a favorite companion to curling up in bed with a good book as well.

However, having kids in the kitchen making individual cups of healthy hot chocolate at different times throughout the day always leads to a big mess, at least for me. So instead of having to pull out all the ingredients each time they want a cup of delicious goodness, I decided to whip up a batch of healthy hot chocolate mix in bulk and, hopefully, cut down on the mess and hassle of making hot chocolate.

Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe

This recipe is your basic hot chocolate recipe only it’s a bit healthier. It uses 100% cacao powder (nothing pre-sweetened) and Pyure sweetener, which is a sugar substitute made of erythritol and stevia. Pyure sweetener is easy on your digestive system and doesn’t have a nasty aftertaste.

Now, I should say that while I’m not a sugar hater, I certainly don’t want to overdo it in the sugar department on a regular basis. I’m totally fine with my kids having dessert or treats on special occasions, particularly during the holidays. However, during this season, there are plenty of opportunities for all of us to have a lot of treats, so when I can use a sugar substitute like Pyure without sacrificing quality or flavor, I take it — for health’s sake.

This healthy hot chocolate recipe fits the bill perfectly. It is super chocolaty and has a nice sweet flavor. You can also add more sweetener to your cup or add in sweet additions like candy canes, chopped chocolate, or marshmallows if you like. We do all those things from time to time.

I hope you enjoy this recipe, and if you’d like to see me make it with my boys, check out this Vlogmas video over on YouTube!

Healthy Hot Chocolate

(Makes 1 quart)

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Use a whisk to thoroughly blend the vanilla extract into the powders as best as you can.
  2. Put your healthy hot chocolate mix in a quart-size glass canning jar. Seal, label, and store.

Usage:

To use, add 2 tablespoons of your healthy hot chocolate mix to 1 cup of milk or water. Whisk well to incorporate powders into the liquid, and heat over medium heat while continuing to whisk so the milk doesn’t burn. Adjust flavor by adding more sweetener if desired.

Enjoy, friend, and may your winter be magical!

Love and light,
Meagan

Thank you so much for your recipe. The one our family used for years is very unhealthy so it is great to find a much better one.
