How Online Herbal Courses Can Make You A Better Herbalist

How Online Herbal Courses Can Make You A Better Herbalist | Growing Up Herbal | Want to learn how to be come an herbalist? Online herbal courses can help!

I’ve been studying and using herbs for almost 8 years, but I’ll be the first to say that learning about herbs can take a lifetime. In fact, I’m not sure that even seasoned herbalists would say they’ve got herbs down pat, even after years and years of study. It’s a journey. A long one.

With that said, there are things I have done in the last 8 years that have definitely moved me forward as an herbalist. Today I want to share some of those things with you in case you too want to make some serious progress in your own personal herbal journey. In fact, we can make some progress together if you’d like, but you’ll have to read to the end of the post to find out what I’m talking about. 😉

Herbal School vs. Self-Study

I often get asked, “How can I become an herbalist?” Most times, my answer is simple.

Just start studying and using herbs.

You can read books, read blogs, take classes or workshops, or even go as far as getting a formal education from an herbal school.

Just like a biologist is someone who studies biology, an herbalist is someone who studies herbs. So if you want to become an herbalist, you have to get to work studying. Thankfully it doesn’t have to be difficult, boring, or even overwhelming.

As far as studying herbs goes, I’ve done it all, and it’s all helped me in very different ways.

One of the most helpful ways I’ve ever learned herbs has been by taking topic-specific herbal courses with well-respected herbalists. This has made a HUGE difference for me!

Bridging The Gap Between Formal Herbal Training & Self-Study

Now, I’m a busy mom with four little boys. This is not the time in my life to be physically going to herbal school or apprenticing with a local herbalist. I mean, I’m not looking to be a clinical herbalist and working with other people at this point in my life. I’m really just wanting to learn how to use herbs for my own family’s health and to teach other moms how to do the same.

So for me, this thing known as “online herbal studies,” bridged the gap between formal herbal school and self-study for a long time.

When I first became interested in herbs I bought and read a lot of herbal books. I stocked up on herbs and I made little herbal concoctions anytime I thought we needed one. But something was lacking. It wasn’t as fun doing things by myself, and I didn’t know if I was learning things the way I should. I had so many questions and no one to ask!

Then I found Learning Herbs and their online herbal courses! I was immediately hooked, and I bought every single one they offered.

Not only did it help me to focus on one thing at a time, but the courses were taught by respected herbalists, they were very organized and easy to get through, I could do them online at my own pace, and I had access to the herbalist teaching the course and the other students in case I had questions. Plus, there was a lot of hands-on learning involved, which in my opinion, really helped me “get it.”

Cutting Through The Overwhelm And Making Learning Herbs Fun & Easy

So if you’ve been trying to learn about herbs for any period of time, you’ll know that it can feel endless, overwhelming, and complicated. I too felt that way, but then something happened.

I took a course called The Taste of Herbs, taught by herbalist Rosalee de la Foret.

Like I said earlier, I’d taken online herbal courses before, but this course really changed my perspective on herbs. It made them doable. It made them accessible.

You wanna know what did it for me?

  1. Instead of having to memorize tons of info about each herb and then figure out which ones to use for whatever I needed, it taught me how to use my senses and my intuition to find the right herbs for the right situation.
  2. It also taught me a lot about myself. Knowing myself (and my kids) helps me to know which kinds of herbs we will need at any given time. That alone cuts down on the amount of herbs I buy and store.
  3. It also found that to learn herbs well, I needed to not rely on books and information so much, but that I needed to get “hands-on” with herbs. Just me and the herb. This is how people have been learning herbs for years. Now don’t get me wrong. Book knowledge, clinical trials and scientific studies all have their place, but those things can sometimes complicate things, especially for the home herbalist.

Learning To Use Herbs Can Be Easy & Doable For You Too

So, if you are feeling like I was feeling once. You know, overwhelmed and unsure of how to really apply herbs to your life, you can do what I did and take an online herbal course.

Learning Herbs has opened registration up for The Taste of Herbs course once again, and this time, it’s new and improved. More info has been added and there are some nice bonuses that come with the course.

I’ve personally gone through this course twice, and I may do it again this year! I love it that much, and I seriously learn something new every single time I go through it. This course makes learning about herbs easy. It helps build your confidence in herbs in a different way than book learning does, it makes finding the right herbs for the right person easier, and it teaches you how to use herbs in your daily life too. Plus, it really helps you to stock your herbal apothecary.
