Traditionally, winter has been a time to slow down and rest. During this season, we often take time to do things that are nourishing to us, whether that’s incorporating handicrafts such, such as knitting, whittling, or baking, into our day, curling up by the fire with some hot cocoa and a good book, or creating a new herbal wellness routine.

When it comes to aligning our lifestyle with the seasons, we can look to the element of water, which represents the season of winter, and let it guide us when it comes to nourishing ourselves, specifically when it comes to using herbs to nourish our body.

Here, two categories of herbs are linked to the water element and can be used to nourish the body during the season—nutritives and adaptogens.

Nutritive herbs contain a significant amount of vitamins and minerals, and they tend to be food-like herbs. These herbs are cooling, nourishing, juicy, and salty-tasting. They promote the flow of fluids in the body, such as blood, lymph, and water. One of the best ways to incorporate these herbs into our winter days is through the use of nourishing infusions.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a house update, so here it is.

This is one view of our house during winter. Through those windows on the left is our bedroom. Next to that are two bathrooms and a coat closet, and after that comes the kitchen.

This spring, the landscaping here will be updated. The following year we’re hoping to change those windows to a door and build a private deck for just the two of us. A couple of years after that, we have plans to change the siding and the roof.

There are many projects being accomplished, yet so many in the waiting. It’s a little overwhelming, but this is the way it goes when settling into a new home. I remember when we moved into the house on the mountain. It took us five years to get it the way we wanted, and even when we’re moved there were still projects left unfinished. But, that is the way it goes, I suppose.

Dean is currently working on our new countertops. I’ll share a photo soon of the current counters, and then, hopefully, soon after that, I’ll share our new counters and backsplash with you. I’m super excited as finishing this project will complete the kitchen (other than the crown molding and the baseboard that is). We’re getting there friends. I can’t help but find myself stressing a bit about the amount of projects on our plates, but at the same time, all the projects it takes to make this house into our home is a bit motivating and exciting at the same time.
