My Winter Skin Care Routine & Recipes (+ A Giveaway)

My Winter Skin Care Routine & Recipes | Growing Up Herbal | Follow my winter skin care routine to keep your skin moisturized, nourished, and healthy during the long cold months of the year. DIY recipes included!

Growing up, I spent a lot of time in the sun. I can remember being dropped off at the city pool as a middle schooler and spending the entire day there, playing in the chlorinated water, laying out in the sun in a bikini, and slathering myself with glittery, perfumed tanning oil.

The goal was to get out of the house, hang out with my friends, and be super tan because that was the cool thing to do. And in middle school, I wanted to be cool.

Nowadays, I’m regretting all that time I spent baking in the sun. First, tanning can damage the skin in ways you don’t see for years. Unfortunately, I’m just now seeing signs of sun damage creep across my skin. Plus, I’m getting older which means my skin is changing, bringing a whole other set of issues to deal with.

Today, I’d like to share my winter skincare routine with you (complete with lots of DIY recipes, if you’re interested).

If you, like me, have minor signs of sun damage and your skin is maturing (did I really just say that!) then hopefully you’ll find these recipes as helpful as I have! And read to the bottom of this post. I’m sharing a sneaky way I feed my skin, and you could win some of that sneakiness for yourself!

To DIY or Buy

Before I get into my actual winter skincare routine, let me quickly talk about how I decide whether to make my homemade skin care products or to buy them.

1. Makin’ A List

The first thing I do is start by making a list of all the skin care products I need for a set period of time. Next, I mark off anything I currently have on hand, and what’s left is what I either need to make or buy.

2. Is It Cost Effective?

Next, I ask myself whether the products I’m considering making and/or buying are cost-effective. By this, I mean comparing the cost of making the product myself versus the cost of buying the product.

My costs in making the product myself include both the total cost of supplies (materials and shipping) and my time. The cost of buying the product includes the product cost and shipping or gas money to get it. More often than not, making my own products is more cost-effective than buying them, especially because I’m looking for pure, organic skincare ingredients, and buying ingredients in bulk always saves me money.

3. Do I Have Time?

The next thing I do is check my weekly planner to see how busy I am. If I’m super busy and can’t find time to make something that I need quickly—I tend to buy it. But, if I can find an hour or two to schedule in making my own skincare products, I prefer to do that. And yes, I have to schedule it in my planner. If I don’t, I either forget about it, or other things get put in its place.

And that, my friend, is how I determine whether to make my own homemade skin care products or to buy them.

My Winter Skin Care Routine

When it comes to sticking with a skincare routine, I’m really lazy. But like I said earlier, I’m creeping up in age, and I realize that I need to start doing a better job taking care of myself if I want to be a hot old lady someday.

Can I get an “Amen!”

Winter, with all that cold weather, can be tough on skin. Personally, my skin is drier in the winter, mainly because we heat our home with a woodstove which dries the air out something terrible. (Don’tcha just love my southern phrases!) That means that the majority of my winter skincare routine is centered around keeping my skin moisturized!

Below, you can see what my winter skincare routine is looking like these days. I’ve divided things up into daily, weekly, and monthly sections. I’ve also included links to the DIY recipes I’ll be using this year as well as links to similar products if you prefer to buy them!

And there you have it. My winter skincare routine to keep my skin moisturized, nourished, and healthy!

Before I go, let me quickly share one more sneaky thing I’ve been doing recently (and will continue doing) to help feed my skin and keep it healthy.

A Sneaky Way To Get Better Skin

If I’m honest, the only thing that motivates me to get out of bed in the morning is knowing there’s a cup of coffee waiting for me in the coffee pot.

It’s certainly not the four hungry bellies that are asking for breakfast!

Oh, no. I’m totally thinking of myself when I crawl out of bed!

“Move it, kid! You know where the cereal is.” (Joking… sort of.)

With that said, I recently started adding my collagen supplement to my coffee every morning, and I’m amazed at how easy it is to remember to take it!

When it comes to supplements, I often forget to take them unless I keep them in a place where I’m reminded of them. For me, that place is by the coffee pot. It’s the first thing I see in the morning (and sometimes again in the afternoon) so it helps to remind me to take my supplements.

Collagen not only supports younger, firmer skin, but it benefits your joint and gut health and helps balance inflammation and metabolism! Hydrolyzed collagen is odorless and tasteless, and the kind I buy is from healthy, grass-fed cows which means it’s healthy for me.

I simply add a scoop into my morning coffee, it instantly dissolves, and I drink it down. It’s as easy as that.

Now, if you’d like to sneak some additional skin food into your diet, enter the giveaway below!

Dry winter skin … me too! I find that keeping up a dry brushing routine helps. I dry brush my skin, shower and then slather on the moisturizer. I use apricot oil with a little vitamin e mixed in. This is for the body, not face!

  8. Leah says:

My winter skin care routine is lots of exfoliation with the Spung and Orange Hydrating cream from Trim Healthy Mama.

  9. Tiffany says:

I don’t have a good routine…just different lotions, that help but aren’t great. I’d love to try collagen!
